Review Eligibility & Requirements

The Inclusive TEAMS program is offered to UNC-Chapel Hill Master of Social Work students who are in the final year of their MSW program (specialization or Advanced Standing). In order to be eligible for Inclusive TEAMS, students must pursue a concentration in Direct Practice as well as meet the following requirements:
SOWO 841 – Child & Adolescent Mental Health: Theory and Practice (3 credits)
Course description: This course presents knowledge and practice theories to understand mental health and well-being in children, adolescents, and their families. It emphasizes practice skills and theories relevant to assessment and evidence-based interventions.
SOWO 842 – Families: Theory and Practice (3 credits)
Course description: A review of explanatory and practice theories for understanding and intervening with families and couples.
SOWO 709 – Social Work with the LGBTQ Community (3 credits)
Course description: This course focuses on significant issues facing the LGBTQ community and how social work practitioners can effectively and affirmatively address these issues to promote mental and social well-being.
SOWO 769 – Core Competencies and Skills: Trauma Informed Practices with Children and Adolescents (3 credits)
Course description: This course facilitates students’ acquisition of the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to effectively use 12 common trauma-informed practice elements in interventions for and the treatment of traumatized children and their families. The course highlights consideration of the impact of trauma, intervention objectives, and the practice elements needed to accomplish the intervention objectives. This course is taught using an inquiry- based learning (IBL) pedagogy to enhance students’ engagement and learning using full- length cases that exemplify the diverse clients a clinician might encounter in practice.
SOWO 761 – Practice with Diverse Populations Affected by Addiction (3 credits)
Course description: This advanced practice course provides an overview of the unique problems and needs of diverse populations living with substance use and addictive disorders and focuses on the application of culturally sensitive and relevant intervention strategies.
SOWO 709 – Social Work with Immigrants and Refugees (1.5 credits)
A combination of webinars, on-line instruction, teleconference consultations and required reading assignments focused on individual, family, group, and community skills for working with and immigrants and refugees.
SOWO 739 – Immigration and Citizenship Law and Policy (1.5 credits)
Course description: This course surveys immigration law and policy in the United States, and the implications that they have for service providers and immigration policy advocates.
SOWO 769 – Cultural Sensitivity: Ways of Knowing, Being, Healing and Honoring Youth and Their Families
Course description: This course emphasizes the importance of cultural knowledge, cross-cultural skill development, self-awareness and the cultural sensitivity needed when engaging in direct practice with diverse populations of youth and families.
Note: MSW students who have been chosen for PrimeCare4Youth or the Golden Policy Fellowship may not apply for Inclusive TEAMS. MSW students may not apply for PrimeCare4Youth and Inclusive TEAMS at the same time.
